Michelle Alexander tells a compelling story about "The New Jim Crow". From policing practices to the prison industrial complex, Black men and boys are often seen as more dangerous, prone to criminality, hyper sexual, and deviant in other ways. Western psychology has both supported the underlying beliefs and pretended to be blind to this reality.

How have you seen western psychology contribute to this narrative?

Abnormal Psychology, Omissions from history, Intelligence

Here are ways I have seen western psychology harm people of African descent: 1) Not giving credit or enough exposure to African Psychology and Eastern Philosophies as having contributed to the history of psychology. 2) In abnormal psychology, not exposing the depth of segregation, differential treatment, and disparities in the care and containment of persons of African descent. (i.e., the Negro Insane Asylums) 3) In abnormal psychology, misdiagnosing and lumping so many people of African descent under the diagnosis "Schizophrenia" due to racism and not considering it important enough to delve deeper into the lives of Black folks, or assumptions made or figuring with certain diagnoses a chemical prison could be just as effective as a physical prison in getting many persons of African descent off the streets, out of commission, and under control. The diagnosis of Drapetomania was just the beginning of misdiagnosing. Misdiagnosing was done in some instances on purpose so that some persons of African descent could be castrated and/or made infertile according to the law. 5) Allowing racists like psychologist Jensen to expound upon his theory of persons of African descent being innately inferior to white persons intellectually, causing many persons of African descent to develop inferiority complexes. 6) When signing up for "Job Corps" as a teen and expressing an interest in psychology, being made to spell the word "psychology" before I would even be taken seriously. I wasn't the only one. We as a people have been the victims of western psychology. Not many expected us to be the creators, theorists, users, or teachers of psychology in general or African/Black psychology. 7) I use to like to read the magazine "Psychology Today" until I read the article within that spoke of African Americans not being considered beautiful. I wrote them a letter and that was the end of my purchases. 8) on and on.....

The so-called Black-White gap in standardized testing in general, and intelligence testing specifically, is rooted and perpetuated by the twin racist ideas of Black inferiority and white superiority.

The APAs (American Psychological Association and American Psychiatric Association) as agents and arbiters of the field of Euro-American psychology should be charged with multiple counts (n=20) of social, physical, and psychological harm related to: 1. Failing to oppose the invasion, kidnapping, torturing, maiming, trafficking, domination, dehumanizing, denigration of African culture, customs, and traditions (resulting in intentional miseducation) and attempted murder of African thought and beliefs. 2. Contributing to a social atmosphere of anger, toxicity, violence, fear, hurt, hate, danger, damage, and destruction by allowing, justifying, condoning, perpetuating and in many instances directing agents and/or advocates of white psychology to continue to perpetuate human atrocity in society globally. 3. Erroneous and consistent imposition of use of the term psychology as universal which, in fact, is Euro-American psychology that is ‘indigenous” to the Euro-American sense of “Whiteness” 4. Serving as the scientific extension, explanation and justification of the Western Grand Narrative of Black domination, negation, and nullification. 5. Knowingly and historically justified and gave legitimacy to reification of Euro-American thought and beliefs as universal. 6. Directly and/or indirectly contributed to and supported individual and state supported acts and beliefs leading to the death and destruction of Black lives. 7. Having an essential role in the defamation, slander, and libelous assault on the character, conduct and consciousness of African people. 8. Pretending to be arbiter of universal human functioning. 9. Being complicit in, and not independent of, the torture and maltreatment of Black people by medical and psychiatric practitioners and establishment. 10. Provided safe harbors to the practitioners of White supremacy by shrouding America’s rabid caste system as a class and race problem. 11. Acts of omission in supporting the profound and lingering psychological effect of global human trafficking, consistently referred to as “slavery”, and colonialism has impacted the psyche of regular everyday African and Euro-American people 12. Providing and requiring foundational texts that serve to continually recruit, misorient and validate the erroneous supremacist ideology within the required domain of “history and systems of psychology 13. Supporting ideas and beliefs that minimized if not eliminated black people’s ability to attain those resources necessary to sustain and advance life and living 14. Failure to acknowledge its role in the defamation, slander, and libelous assault on the character, conduct and consciousness of African people. 15. Abdicate its unjustifiable claim to be the arbiter of universal human functioning. 16. Failure to acknowledge that Euro-American psychology has been complicit in, and not independent of, the torture and maltreatment of Black people by medical and psychiatric practitioners and establishment. 17. Failure to admit that its members and/or divisions have provided safe harbors to the practitioners of White supremacy by shrouding America’s rabid caste system as a class and race problem. 18. Failure to address how its support of the profound and lingering psychological effect of global human trafficking, consistently referred to as “slavery”, and colonialism has impacted the psyche of regular everyday African and Euro-American people. 19. Failure to recognize the historical legacy of foundational texts that serve to continually recruit, misorient and validate this erroneous supremacist ideology within the required domain of “history and systems of psychology” 20. Failed to examine the co-mingling of whiteness, white privilege, and the pathology of white supremacy.

Child and Family Separations

Child welfare and family separation policies are demonstrably racist as shown in studies, reports, and in the public discourse. Numerous reports show that Black children are overrepresented in the foster care system, which can be best explained by Institutional and Systemic Racism. In many cases, a court decision to separate a child from their family turns on the evaluation by a psychologist. Despite the known harms to Black families, the American Psychological Association says nothing about this harm in its "Guidelines for Psychological Evaluations in Child Protection Matters". Furthermore, the APA's apology fails to address this harm, and much less, correct it. Ultimately, this system continues to terrorize Black children and Black families and has long-lasting consequences for the child, the family, and the community.
